With six European Tour victories under his name, including the prestigious Smurfit European Open, Johnie Walker Classic and Linde German Masters, New Zealander Michael Campbell had remained a prominent figure in the European circuit until 2003 when he chose to play full time on the US Tour. Playing in Asia is nothing new to Campbell – he has since turning pro participated in Omega Hong Kong Open, Carlsberg Malaysian Open and had won in the Indonesian Alfred Dunhill Masters in 1995.
Campbell soared to prominence in his rookie season of 1995 by leading the British Open at St Andrews after three rounds before eventually tieing for third. He received an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit Award for his services to golf in The Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2001.
