The shift to a one-design solution is a radical departure for the race, and one that will put more emphasis than ever before on the racing out on the water and slightly less of a demand on physical strength.

The crew size has been reduced from 11 crew (10 plus 1 onboard reporter) to 8 plus 1 non-sailing multimedia reporter. All-women's teams are allowed three extra crew (11 plus 1 onboard reporter), which allows them to be a truly competitive team against their male rivals.

During the 2011-12 race the six onboard reporters between them captured more than 4,000 high resolution images, recorded more than 300 audio interviews and connected sailors to more than 1,000 radio and TV interviews.

There are five fixed camera positions and two uplink points, which will combine to give coverage from all angles. All the cameras can be remote controlled and directed from the onboard reporters media station while the new microphone locations and systems will enhance voice recording.

The new 沃尔沃Ocean 65 has been designed with a protected companionway hatch where a camera and mic point have been installed. This will allow the reporters to get right in the faces of the sailors without getting the lens too wet. Key to the project is that the cameras and microphones now have much better protection from wind and water, enabling interviews in the cockpit.

From Race Control in the races headquarters in Alicante, organisers can also remote control the cameras onboard and view any of the boats at any given time.

The are two‘crash buttons’on each boat below and on deck. If any of the sailors pushes one of the buttons, it sends out a distress signal to organisers in Race Control and the cameras onboard start recording automatically to not miss any of the action onboard. In moments of distress, safety becomes a priority over reporting.

(1) The Onboard Reporter’s work station. Here they can operate the remote controlled cameras, edit footage and manage LIVE satellite Connections.
