Held by Chinese Athletic Association, approved by General Administration of Sport and Beijing government, certificated by IAAF and Association of International Marathons and Road Races, Beijing International Marathon Tournament is the highest-level marathon tournament in China. First held in 1981 and every year since then, the tournament has developed into a traditional international tournament with great influence.
The route of Beijing International Marathon Tournament is broad and plain, the weather is adequate and the awards are intermediate. With a high organizing and competing level and the hospitality of Beijing people, the match has been attracting more and more outstanding athletes from all over the world.
The best result in Beijing International Marathon Tournament is 2:07:35, created by Japanese Taisuke Kodama in 1986 and Ethiopian Abebe Mekonnen in 1988. That result was then confirmed the 5th best result in marathon history by IAAF and Association of International Marathons and Road Races.
Beijing International Marathon is held in October in Beijing. The weather being sunny and dry, it is the most wonderful time of the year in Beijing. The blending of Beijing’s ancient charm and modern urban view make the city even more attactive.
In order to extend the influence of Beijing International Marathon and let more amateur marathon athletes join in the match, the organizers have adjusted time limit to 5 hours since 1998. M/F marathon, half marathon, 10-km race and mini marathon are set events of the match, with over 10 thousand athletes participating.
As Beijing was confirmed home city of Olypics 2008, the construction of road system and sports facilities is acceleratedly underway. That will surely provide better fields and atmosphere for the international marathon held here, and make the match more and more challenging, rivalrous, participative and interesting.
