Look at his feet. As he picks up his dribble he does a little hop and lands on both feet at the same time. This helps to maintain balance and gives you the option to fade away over either shoulder. He even does a little fake over his right shoulder before turning around and hitting the shot.

It was shot with Imax cameras for Jordan to the Max. You'd know that if you saw it in an empty theater on opening night an hour and a half drive away from your high school.

I'd rather just run back exactly like this. At least I have a chance to guard an open 3. Mason can handle himself.

Part of it is because of the rules at the time. You weren't allowed to just hover between two players, so like you said, if you wanted to double MJ at all, you had to hard double him like that, and if you needed to get back to your guy, you had to actually get back to your guy (you couldn't just stand in the passing lane for a bit and sag off your man).

This is part of what makes it hard to run an offense through a dominant big man in the new rules. Back in the 90s, if they saw the double coming, the big knew they had an open guard. If there weren't two people actively on them, they knew they had time to make a one-on-one post move. With people lurking halfway on the weak side all the time these days, it's much easier to disrupt things defensively
