Isaiah Austin was born in Fresno, California, the oldest of the three

and spent most of his childhood in Arlington Texas.

Basketball ran in the Austin family.

His uncle Isaac Austin played nine seasons in the NBA

The first time he took the ball down the court, he dribbled between his legs at four years old

By middle school Isaiah was already six foot seven, and big time college coaches knew his name

But a setback in his last middle game at age fourteen forced Isaiah to re-evaluate his dream

We were playing one of our rival schools, and I just dunked it and I remember just coming down

It was like a, a red curtain over my eye

Isaiah had suffered a detached retina, aggravating a prior baseball injury

He would never again see out of his right eye, and he feared he’d never again play the game he loved.

I lost all depth perception of my eyes. Everything, even from like walking through like a doorway

sometimes I would find myself a little bit too far right and my shoulder would hit the door

There was time I just wanted to quit

Think I just wasn't gonna be able to catch back up to the competition, and you know I didn't know what I was gonna do

I said you know you can either make it your excuse or you can make it your story

Stayed up to practice every day, working hard, you know, on both sides of the floor

Right after I went completely blind, my game just like elevated. I don't even, I can’t even explain it to you how it did

But in my mind I was like I’m unstoppable right now.

Your eyesight, it wasn't something you told lots of people about

I was just, in fear of you know, losing my scholarship offers

He had letters and offers from almost every university you can think of

major basketball universities, from Kentucky to Louisville

But Isaiah’s heart was close to home

Baylor University in Waco Texas was less than a hundred miles from his family

And Baylor’s head coach Scott Drew had recruited Isaiah since middle school

A shoulder injury dwelled Isaiah’s NBA dreams after his freshman season

But his resume only improved in his sophomore year

He was named to the All big 12 defensive team
这年，他入选了大十二联盟最佳防守阵容
And sent the Bears to the NCAA tournament

Coming back was, really, was only the best decision of my life

After two seasons in Baylor, Isaiah was ready

The boy who overcame blindness, is now a man eager for the next step

After Isaiah got invited to the NBA combine, he called and said

“mum, he said, they want do an additional testing

They wanna test me for Marfans

And I said, and I laughed at it. I said “oh Isaiah”, I said

“it’s probably something they didn't have to do.”

Marfan syndrome is a rare disease affecting the body’s connective tissue

Signs can be longer limbs, or curving spine, or enlarged aorta

which is the part of the disease that can be fatal

A positive diagnosis would mean an end to his NBA dreams

I really didn't think much about Marfan

I was like what are the odds that you know I have this

So I’m driving home from work thinking Isaiah will be the first draftee with a disability

And then I get the phone call from the doctor, and he gave us the diagnosis that

You know, the test came back positive, and we are stunned

We didn't even know what to do, stunned

It was different if, you know this is the first thing he’s gone through

NBA commissioner Adam Silver invited Isaiah and his family to experience the event

I was happy that I got to go to New York. I know it was different from what I wanted it to be

It just hit me right there you know that my life was saved by God

Isaiah returned to Baylor as a student this fall

He’s now an assistant basketball coach for Scott Drew

A job awaits him in the NBA

Because finding out about Marfan syndrome is giving me opportunities

That I don’t think basketball would have granted me in my life

Like what?

Just you know having a kid really look at you in your eyes
就像，有的小朋友会看着我的眼睛
And telling you that they they, you inspired them
