Isaiah Austin was born in Fresno, California, the oldest of the three

and spent most of his childhood in Arlington Texas.

Basketball ran in the Austin family.

By middle school Isaiah was already six foot seven, and big time college coaches knew his name

But a setback in his last middle game at age fourteen forced Isaiah to re-evaluate his dream

We were playing one of our rival schools, and I just dunked it and I remember just coming down

Isaiah had suffered a detached retina, aggravating a prior baseball injury

Your eyesight, it wasn't something you told lots of people about

A shoulder injury dwelled Isaiah’s NBA dreams after his freshman season

But his resume only improved in his sophomore year

He was named to the All big 12 defensive team

After two seasons in Baylor, Isaiah was ready

The boy who overcame blindness, is now a man eager for the next step

After Isaiah got invited to the NBA combine, he called and said

And I said, and I laughed at it. I said “oh Isaiah”, I said

Marfan syndrome is a rare disease affecting the body’s connective tissue

which is the part of the disease that can be fatal

So I’m driving home from work thinking Isaiah will be the first draftee with a disability

And then I get the phone call from the doctor, and he gave us the diagnosis that

Although Isaiah would no longer be drafted

NBA commissioner Adam Silver invited Isaiah and his family to experience the event

I was happy that I got to go to New York. I know it was different from what I wanted it to be

Isaiah returned to Baylor as a student this fall

He’s now an assistant basketball coach for Scott Drew

A job awaits him in the NBA

Because finding out about Marfan syndrome is giving me opportunities

That I don’t think basketball would have granted me in my life

这些机会是篮球无法提供的

Like what?

Just you know having a kid really look at you in your eyes

就像,有的小朋友会看着我的眼睛

And telling you that they they, you inspired them
